History & Specifications of Porsche 356 Pre-A
356 Porsche came in two body styles as coupe and cabriolet. Both had two doors, rear mounted air cooled engine. Some early cabriolet bodies were built by the coachbuilder. Both Cabriolet and coupes had a distinct aerodynamic appearance. Their narrow wheels, rear lever shocks, low horse power engines, and non synchronized gearboxes made them challenging to drive. The 356 was named because it was the 356th project form the Porsche design office. There was a major changes occurred with the introduction of a new model. 1950 coupes and cabriolets correspond to the first order of bodies from Porsche to Reutter. Their chassis numbers have four digits starting with a number 5.
For the second order of bodies, in 1951 model Porsche had decided to assign a different series of five digit numbers for coupes and cabriolet. Glaser cabriolets began with 103 or 104 and Reutter cabriolets 100 or 101. No significant changes occurred at the introduction of this model. The coupe shows lack of rear window bright trim and had an initial real light arrangement in the model 51.
The 1952 Model was distinguished from earlier cars with its one-piece bent windshield with bright aluminum trim and a larger front hood handle. They also had slightly larger hood handles with a hole and deep faced gauges with green and red graphics. They were produced only form March through September 1952.
The 1953 model was produced from October 1952 through March 1954. Externally the bumpers were modified. Side by side tail lights replaced the vertical arrangement used previously. A Porsche crest adorned the horn button of the new steering wheel. 1953 models had a separate bumper for all models and the turn signals were directly below the headlights. The car was known for the tremendous quality and outstanding road handling. Furthermore, it was well known as for its spaciousness and softness.
The main visual differences in 1954 model comparing the earlier model were horn grills up front, the first fuel gauges and the dashboard knobs which were no longer of VW origins. The abbreviated model year for 1954 356 was April through October 1954.
In 1955, Max Hoffman was the sold US importer of Porsche products. He created the name Speedster for the stripped down 356. 1955 was produced for American market and featured a low removable windshield, light weight removable soft top and side curtains. Additionally, coupe and cabriolet models were side scripted with the name Continental. The front hood handle was much larger and featured an enameled Porsche crest. By the late 1955 rocker panel moldings were added to coupes and cabriolet, giving a dressier look. The Speedster was introduced in 1955 with note side trim and side by side beehive tail lights. 1955 Speedster was the genuine success for the Porsche.
